Zack Pomerleau

What is it about Zack Pomerleau that sets him apart from others in the harmonica world? You can easily answer this question for yourself by going to a Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones show, where you will witness a trio featuring Doug Deming, Andrew Gohman on bass, and Zack playing drums.

There you will quickly notice that the band features harp but there is certainly no harp player on stage...right? This is when you realize Zack is not only laying down the shuffle groove for the band but also playing amplified blues harp reminiscent of Little and Big Walter. Born in Maine in 1993, his musical journey began early receiving his first drum set for Christmas at the age of 5. By the age of 12 he was playing gigs as a solo act singing and playing guitar.

It was during this time he began playing harmonica, inspired to learn not because of blues greats but because of John Sebastian’s playing on The Door’s “Live in Detroit” album and “Roadhouse Blues.” This eventually led to him discovering Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Paul Butterfield, and Little Walter. By the age of 14 he had performed with legendary blues drummer Sam Lay, was fronting his own blues group, and was gigging and in local blues festivals.

Finally, in 2010 he represented Maine in the International Blues Competition. Eventually Zack’s group broke up and he focused more on drumming. For the next several years he played off and on with local blues musicians and groups such as Mike Hayward, Victor Montez Jr., Oble Varnum, and The Juke Joint Devils. More recently in 2019 he joined Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones as their full time drummer in Bradenton, Florida.

He continued as solely their drummer until early 2020 when the group became a trio. At any given show you will hear a plethora of originals and blues classics featuring Zack playing amplified rack harmonica, not to mention his signature shuffle sound.

Zack Pomerleau uses SEYDEL 1847 harmonicas, the GECKO holder, and the RackIt! By BlowsMeAway Productions.
